When Code Meets Capital, a New Era of Business Is Born

By Max Reiff, Partner A.GAIN and Ricardo Osorio, CIO Protein Capital

The future of business simply will not be built with yesterday’s tools. What powered industries for decades can no longer sustain them.

Emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and blockchain have moved beyond distant promises or tools reserved for technical experts. They are silent engines already transforming how products are built, decisions are made, value is exchanged, and trust is established.

What once seemed unthinkable — automating complex workflows, delivering personalized services at scale, and making financial assets behave like software — is now not only possible but inevitable. The companies leading this shift won’t be those adopting tools for the sake of innovation but those recognizing that every new technology conceals a new business model waiting to emerge.

At IDC Ventures, this belief defines our investment strategy. From Funds I and II to our partnership with Protein Capital (our digital assets partner), we back visionary teams who understand that AI and blockchain are not tactical solutions, but strategic infrastructure.

Blockchain as the Foundation for Trust and Value

Until recently, the idea of putting real-world assets on a blockchain felt like a futuristic vision with little immediate utility. But that vision has accelerated into a commercial reality. Today, some of the world’s largest financial institutions like BlackRock, Vanguard, and MultiBank, among others, are moving billions of dollars in assets on-chain.

Why now? Because the infrastructure is ready, regulations are catching up, and the benefits are impossible to ignore. Blockchain offers increased transparency, instant settlements, and significant reductions in transaction costs. BlackRock’s $150 billion Treasury Trust Fund is being mirrored on-chain to improve traceability. MultiBank just partnered in a record-breaking tokenization deal worth $3 billion in real estate.

Tokenization, once an abstract concept, is becoming Wall Street’s new playbook. By creating digital representations of real-world assets, like stocks or Treasury bills, on blockchain, financial managers can streamline processes that traditionally required intermediaries, hours of paperwork, and costly oversight. These new digital rails offer cheaper, faster, and more transparent alternatives.

This isn’t theoretical. For example, IDCV portfolio company Securitize has issued over $1 billion in assets on-chain in collaboration with BlackRock and Hamilton Lane. As an SEC-regulated platform, it merges trust with innovation, bringing capital markets into the digital age. Most recently, Securitize launched $VBILL in partnership with VanEck, a blockchain-native alternative to money market funds backed by U.S. Treasuries.

Beyond financial markets, blockchain is also reimagining how physical infrastructure is built and maintained. Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Networks (DePIN) use token-based incentives to coordinate communities around the creation of wireless networks, data storage systems, sensor grids, and even energy networks. Instead of relying on large corporations and capital-intensive buildouts, these systems reward individuals directly for contributing hardware and data. It’s a new way to scale critical infrastructure: faster, more globally, and with far greater resilience.

By shifting ownership from corporations to communities, blockchain is laying the foundation for more inclusive and adaptive systems across industries.

Artificial Intelligence is the New Engine of Productivity

If blockchain is transforming the rails of value exchange, artificial intelligence is redefining the engine of productivity.

AI is compressing what once took years and teams to achieve. Today, a single engineer can build what used to require ten engineers. A product that once cost millions to develop can now be launched in weeks at a fraction of the cost. Entire categories are being reborn as AI automates complexity, expands reach, and encodes expertise into software.

A new wave of intelligent agents is now extending this transformation further. These autonomous AI systems can perform tasks, make decisions, and interact with users or other software, often without human input. From scheduling meetings to navigating enterprise workflows, AI agents are becoming digital collaborators that learn, adapt, and operate independently across platforms. They don’t just accelerate processes, they begin to own them, continuously optimizing outcomes as they go.

We see this transformation firsthand across our portfolio. Osigu, for instance, is revolutionizing healthcare payments in Latin America. As the region’s first fully digital, AI-powered platform for revenue cycle and claims management, it connects healthcare providers, payers, and patients through a secure, cloud-based system. By embedding intelligence at the core of its operations, Osigu has optimized the payment cycle for over 50 healthcare institutions, delivering faster processing, better fraud detection, and greater financial transparency.

In the world of financial services, Taxfyle is doing something similar. Its real-time tax filing app now integrates AI to handle large portions of tax preparation, reducing accountant workloads and offering more affordable, efficient services to clients. Gibobs, another portfolio company, is using AI to analyze users’ financial profiles and generate custom recommendations for Spain’s mortgage market, helping more people make smarter, faster decisions.

What ties these companies together isn’t just the use of AI, it’s how they’re using it to rewrite what’s possible. Services once too niche are now viable. Margins once constrained by manual labor are expanding. Expertise once hard to find is now encoded into large language models.

Together, Blockchain and AI are the Backbone of a New Economy

The convergence of these two forces creates a new architecture for value creation.

Blockchain provides trust, transparency, and programmability. AI adds context, reasoning, and scale. Together, they make it possible to imagine systems where digital agents manage tokenized assets, negotiate contracts, or price risk in real time, all with full auditability and precision.

In an era where AI-generated content can be indistinguishable from the real thing, the role of blockchain as a layer of verification becomes more critical than ever. It anchors truth in a world where misinformation and fraud are increasingly automated. The timing of their convergence is necessary: one accelerates capability, the other enforces accountability.

This is not science fiction. It’s the groundwork being laid for tomorrow, and it aligns squarely with IDC Ventures’ focus on fintech, digital infrastructure, and marketplaces.

The most powerful vision emerges when these technologies don’t just coexist, but collaborate. Imagine autonomous AI agents with access to blockchain wallets, negotiating deals, settling payments, or deploying capital with logic, speed, and transparency. These are tools for building economies that run on trust and intelligence by default.

Those who understand these foundational shifts today will shape the industries of tomorrow. AI and blockchain are more than technologies, they are catalysts for entirely new markets, new rules, and new relationships between people, businesses, and capital.
